The River Motagua has become a major source of pollution for the Guatemalan communities it encounters on its way to the ocean. It contributes an estimated 2% of global ocean plastic pollution, plus chemical pollution due to unmanaged waste flows. Rotary clubs across Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize, in partnership with governments and private organizations, have formed the Alliance for the Motagua River, implementing a multi-phase intervention strategy including the installation of waste interceptors, community education and behavioral change campaigns, waste management system improvements, policy advocacy and infrastructure development, and chemical testing for pollutants.
